Taylor Ho Bynum
Taylor Ho Bynum has established a reputation as a unique musical voice willing to take chances in a wide variety of artistic contexts. His projects cover a wide range of artistic expression: from ensembles in the jazz tradition, to work with DJs, contemporary classical composers and world music ensembles, to composing for film and theater, to collaborations with dancers and visual artists. His present working ensembles are SpiderMonkey Strings (consisting of the unusual instrumentation of cornet, string quartet, electric guitar, tuba and drums, with Jason Kao Hwang, Jessica Pavone, Stephanie Griffin, Tomas Ulrich, Pete Fitzpatrick, Joe Daley, and Luther Gray), his Trio (with Joe Daley and Tomas Fujiwara), and his Quintet (with Mary Halvorson, Evan O’Reilly, Jessica Pavone, and Tomas Fujiwara.) He has also developed a body of solo music for cornet and duo work with dancer/choreographer Rachel Bernsen.
In addition to leading his own groups, Bynum regularly performs with a host of leading figures in creative music, and is featured on over thirty recordings. His work with Anthony Braxton ranges from duo to orchestra, most recently touring throughout Europe and North America with Braxton’s new Sextet and Trio, and co-conducting Braxton’s European Creative Orchestra in Austria. Their CD Duets (Wesleyan) 2002 has received wide critical acclaim. He is a member of Cecil Taylor’s Orchestra Humane (Ubunto); recent performances include a week-long NYC engagement in celebration of the legendary pianist’s 75th birthday.
An all-star ensemble brings a genre-defying spirit and sense of humor to eclectic extended suites.

"His music embraces all styles of jazz while his trumpet work evokes the sound of Lester Bowie and Lee Morgan, plus other modern players...for any and all lovers of modern creative music." — The Hartford Courant
"Taylor has a totally fresh sound, a fresh approach. He\'s one of the guys who\'s bringing the music into the next millennium." — Anthony Braxton
"Forget the shape of jazz to come.
Though we’re blessed to have avant-garde avatars... thriving in their eighth decades, the revolution they seeded continues to regenerate. Taylor Ho Bynum... belongs to a rising breed of jazzhead, new kids on the block who are enriching the improviser’s vocabulary with their own stirring voices and dizzying rush of language... one of the most exciting figures in jazz’s new power generation." — Time Out Chicago
