The Space Between
One of the more inventive collectives in improvisational music, The Space Between is Philip Gelb, shakuhachi; long time collaborator Dana Reason, piano; and legendary figure of the American avant garde, composer and educator Pauline Oliveros, on her custom built just intonation accordion.

Because they reside in scattered areas of the country, it is a rare treat to see them perform. Four very special performances, three with guest bassists, and each thoroughly unique, are available on 482 Music.

The cd with Barre Phillips was described as "extraordinary".. "fully rewarding".. "memorable in its audacity".. "a mix of paradox, tension, co-operation and different backgrounds brought together in a relaxed, unhurried way that sounds like nothing before it."

And the date with Joëlle Léandre: "Léandre sounds so comfortable it's as if she's been playing with the group for years."

On June 5, 2003 the jazz-improv community, and specifically Bay Area musicians, suffered the tragic loss of bass player Matthew Sperry. We are connected with the Bay Area through several existing and upcoming recordings, and Matthew was a friend of each of those musicians. 482 has made available a release of a program he performed with The Space Between in 1999, all proceeds from which will go to the Matthew Sperry Memorial Fund to benefit his wife Stacia and daughter Lila.
