The Exciting Trio (Griffin Rodriguez, b, elec; Matt Schneider, g, elec; David Pakovic, d, melodica) is really a fine free Jazz guitar trio who’ve added a lot of electronics to their sound. This makes them different, but not too much so. The electronic sounds on In Chicago There is Willy (482 Music 1023, 51:22) are tasteful and always background to the group guitar sound. Matt Schneider’s guitar is clear and melodic and clever, and he works well in tandem with Rodriguez’ bass. Pakovic is a light handed drummer, keeping things moving, and adding his melodica here and there with a harmonica like effect. But this expanded trio is not AMM. The music is free, yet it is always tonal and interesting, and now and then it even swings.
